Happy Hip!
I had my left hip resurfaced in Sep 04 at 38 y/o, and I've never looked back. If I had to do it all over again, I'd do it w/ Dr. DeSmet & his team. My hip is now 7 1/2 yrs old, and I have a whole new lease on life. Pre-surgery, I had extremely limited range of motion and a very pronounced limp. I was also in a tremendous amount of pain most of the time. I made do, and it didn't stop me, but the pain & limitation became unbearable. Today I walk fine and the world is wide open! I no longer have a limp, and as my brother said when he first saw me weeks after surgery, my legs are both facing forward in the same direction! Hip resurface surgery was in FDA trial in 2004; only a handful of surgeons were doing it in the U.S. When I learned about Dr. DeSmet (Yahoo group "Surface Hippy") and did the research, it was a no brainer that he was the man for the job. I recommend anyone go to him. Travel to Belgium or Italy is well worth the trip, and money. I was lucky to have a friend come with me, and we travelled Belgium and to England less than a week after surgery, before coming back to the U.S. Dr. DeSmet is a gifted surgeon with the precision and mind of an engineer...the perfect mix for resurface surgery. He's super-responsive to Qs, and he took the time to meet another "hippy" friend & I for lunch while in LA at a conference a few years ago - - you don't often (ever?) hear of U.S. doctors doing this. I still have a picture of Dr. DeSmet and I up in my home, taken days after surgery His expertise, precision and team changed my life.

Eight months ago (July 2010) I (female, 46 years) was not able to walk the 10 minutes from the station to my work, due to the huge pain in my hips, and 7 months later I ski black slopes in France. That was an incredible experience! Half a year ago I went through bilateral hip operation by Koen de Smet in which he gave me two cement less (pink!) big ball (40 cm) ceramic hips, and, as Koen promised me, an almost perfect anatomy. My right hip was diagnosed with osteoarthritis 6 years ago. As sub-top Olympic distance triathlete this was quite a confrontation, I had to stop immediately with running and of course also triathlons. Almost 4,5 years later also my left hip was diagnosed with osteoarthritis. The pain gradually increased and my sport doctor advised me to contact orthopaedist Koen de Smet from Gent, Belgium. In January 2010 I had my first consult with Koen de Smet. Just by looking at my X-ray, he knew immediately what the cause of my osteoarthritis was, hip dysplasia and other (small) anatomic deformations on both sides, a diagnosis I had not been able to get in The Netherlands. It was too early to operate, but I would be a good candidate for a bilateral operation. However, in the summer of 2010, I did get so much pain, taking an high amount of pain killers at the same time, that Koen (during his holidays!) proposed me by email to operate several months earlier than originally planned. Directly after my own holiday I found myself on the operation table in August 2010. Due to my anatomic deformations he had advised me THR instead of BHR. I was extremely nervous, it was difficult to accept that I, a healthy sportive 46 year old woman, would be operated on both of my hip joints. However, Koen had won my full trust, and the permanent pain was unbearable, something had to be done. After the operation I went to the ANCA clinic, where I had hydrotherapy from professional and cheerful Evelyne. The aftercare in the clinic and also back at home is excellent. Koen still answers my questions by email. My recovery was extremely fast. Two days after the operation I stood next to my bed with a 4-leg thing, one day later with crutches (but I was pain free and I enjoyed every step!), after 6 weeks I walked without crutches, after 7 weeks I biked, after 2,5 months I went back to work, after 3,5 months I skated on natural ice in Holland (December 3, 2010), after 4 months I made my first trip by plane for my work, and now after 6 months, February 2011, I sky with my family black slopes in France and it looks if nothing happened! Hiking, swimming and biking also go very well. Thank you Koen for your excellent expertise, extremely good aftercare and your excellent professional team. I enjoy every bit of my new hip joints!

PERFECT BLUEPRINT OF PATIENT-DRIVEN CARE : Dr . Koen de Smet and his whole team really did an outstanding job for me. Never experienced such patient-driven care in my life ! This attitude really is what it is all about here. For these professionals this is the usual routine here in the ANCA-clinic in Gent, but for me being Dutch and used to the conservative and paternalistic way most Dutch surgeons approach their patients this was a really unique experience. Suffering from a-vascular necrosis at both hips, 9 months to late diagnosed at the AMC in Amsterdam, I came in quite badly invalidated . My very bad right hip was first treated with a resurfacing operation, left might need nesurfacing later. This evening I am leaving after 3 days hospital and especially the 5 days ANCA-clinic and for the first time in 10 months I am feeling fit again. ! Dr. Koen .de Smet is really caring for his patients. Of course he comes to your hospitalbed , asking how you are feeling and informing you about the operation. But who is friendly knocking at your room door on Sunday morning , just 10 minutes after you have arrived at his private ANCA-clinic? De Smet does, just to ask how you are doing and if you have any questions left. This guy really has a drive. In general the whole team’s approach is 100% patient-driven. It is all about your particular needs taken care for, so the whole focus is on a quick revalidation and you feeling good while you are recovering. The approach really works: their unique aqua-therapy which strengthens your hip every day and gives you immediate confidence, the lovely restaurant where from day 1 they know your front name and you can dine with fine and light foods, the physiotherapist , the wound care, the workouts, the service minded front desk. I don’t have any stocks into Dr. Koen de Smets clinic, but would just share this with you as I came out as a very happy , satisfied and unbelievable quick recovered patient from a real bad hip. Thanks Dr. Koen, and thanks to the whole very motivated team in your clinic. You all are doing a tremendous job there in Gent. I was diagnosed with bilateral osteonecrosis of my hips in 2004- After long months of pain and research, I came across Dr De Smet. By that time, I had tried all kinds of alternative treatment as well and knew that surgery would be the only solution. I had the surgery done in 2006 and by the next day, I could walk without pain and within 4 weeks, I was back to normal activities- Dr. De Smet was nothing short of wonderful- He's the best surgeon and the kindest human being who takes the time to really take care of his patients. My R BHR was performed on Dec 9, 08 by Dr. De Smet. After the excellent surgery and rehab at the Villa I was able to travel to Paris, Madrid, Barcelona and Rome. I traveled on Plane, Bus, train, Boat, metro and taxi for 25 days straight without any complications. My progress is substantial and I am basically pain free at 5 weeks Post op. Dr De Smet and the people he surrounds himself with are all top notch caring professionals who treat each patient like family. I could not have been happier with both the treatment and outcome so far.

I am almost 7 years post LBHR by Dr De Smet. I was a very difficult case with large cysts on the femur and difficult hip geometry due to previous surgery. Everything is still GREAT with the hip. Just got back from 30 days travelling New Zealand with lots of walking on trails. I will always be greatful to this great doctor for his fine work. I´m 34 and I´m considering total hip replacemente. After discover this site, I want to Know more about hip resurfacing.Can anyone tell me what is the better choise for a young guy who loves to cycling.
In Portugal the Hip Resurfacing isn,t a normal procedure but after I read about it I think probably is the best choise to me.

My doc said to go through THR when I can not have normal life but for me this situation is not very normal. I know I´ll have to go through this sooner or later and I´d appreciate to have any comment from someone who was in the same situation.

I just want to enjoy life and do what I like, and if this can help me I´ll go through it immediately.

Koen gave me my lifestyle back with a resurfacing of my left hip. I am back to playing beach volleyball and leading an active life. I had it done in April of 03 and the results were great. The only side effect is a slightly siffer hamstring than pre surgery. I am probably one year away of havinmg my other hip resurfaced. I will go into the surgery with no trepidation and with great confidence.

I have just had my L. hip re-surfaced 2 weeks ago-June 6, 2006. I am back in the gym now doing an abbreviated work-out but still fairly rigourous. I am riding the stationary (non-recumbant bike) for 15 minutes and walking with one crutch 2 times a day for about 1/2 hour each time. My gym routine consists of 10-12 exercises.
I am experiencing a bit of clunking in the L hip 1-2 times a day with certain positions. I am also experiencing some adductor pain and IT band pain.
A couple of questions for anyone-what was your early course of recovery like. When did you lose the crutch, and when did you stop pain relievers?

Your time answering these questions would be most appreciated.

After years of intensive research I am considering scheduling my hip resurfacing this year with Dr. De Smet in Belgium. I´m 36 and suffered traumatic pelvis fracture/13 breaks and left total hip dislocation 21 years ago in a car accident. My hip pain and range of motion have progressed to the point now that my left hip has 8% (or less) of movement causing further problems in my back and knee to compensate.
I have been highly recommended to Dr. De Smet for resurfacing.

5 years ago at the age of 50 I had my first THR on my left hip. In December 2005, I had a THR on my right hip. This became infected with an allergy in the prothesis itself and took a further 5 operations to resolve the problem.

It´s two months exactly since I had my left hip resurfaced and I wish to thank Dr de Smet and his team for helping me to regain my mobility. I am almost at the stage of forgetting that I have had this operation because my leg feels pretty normal again and I´m back to my routines and day-to-day activities. Hi there,

I´m 32 and I´m considering hip re-surfacing. Though I can have a normal life, I like all kind of sports and practicing biking, motorcycling, trekking, etc... so everytime I practice I have pain and of course my movility is getting reduced considerably.

My doc said to go through HRS when I can not have normal life but for me this situation is not very normal. I know I´ll have to go through this sooner or later and I´d appreciate to have any comment from someone who was in the same situation.

My concern is to know if I´ll be better than now by Hip Re-surfacing or I should wait until arriving to a worst stage.

I just want to enjoy life and do what I like, and if this can help me I´ll go through it immediately.

Merry Christmas Everyone!!!

It´s now 8 months post-op and my new hips are amazing!! I´ve been able to do all aspects of farming and carpentry, including re-roofing a large house with no problems.

Even my chiropractor is amazed at how "normal" my movements and day to day activities are. I tell everyone who asks about the surgery that if it weren´t for the scars, I wouldn´t be able to say there was anything there at all, it feels, well, like nothing at all.

God bless all of you for your splendid work, especially you, Dr. DeSmet.

P.S. mountain biking and cross-country skiing again after several years of torture was close to heaven!!

I am now 11 months postop with BHR in my right hip and want to convey how positive this decision has been for me. I am a very active 62 year old who chose resurfacing because I dreaded the reduction in activities with a THR. It was the right decision. Koen was very communciative in helping me reach it. I was on my bicycle a month after surgery and doing hard bike tours in the mountains in 4 months. Now I am skiing black runs better than ever with no pain. I don´t even worry about dislocation. So thanks be to the highly skilled Dr. DeSmet and his team in Gent. I should add I was very disappointed in how little U.S. orthopedic doctors know about the resurfacing option

I am 55 year old Male who was operated on by Dr. De Smet on Oct 5, 2004. Today is Oct. 22, 2004. I drove for the first time today. I am pain free and walking well with one crutch, working and have been pain free since the operation for the first time in 3 years.
I wish to thank Dr. De Smet for his candor, kindness and care, both in the hospital and at the Holiday Inn UZ Gent. The team approach certainly assisted me in my remarkable recovery. I was greatly impressed with the organization and with the co-ordinated care by therapist Marc and nurse Jan. Hugo was excellent in transportation and administration. I also received great support from other "hippies" staying at the Holiday Inn.
Much can be said but I can only say for those considering the resurfacing option, I am very pleased that I travelled to Gent from Canada for this operation.

The surgeon with whom I spoke about replacement warned of considerable limitation in yoga after the surgery. What is the expectation after resurfacing? I am 43yrs young. I had enjoyed a very active life until a few years ago when I had a slight accident on a treadmill. I did not see a doctor for several months. The long story short is that I have now had (rt) hip arthroscopy, debridement, and after 2 months of physical therapy I am still on one crutch or limping(from the pain). My OS has said that a hip replacement is the next step. I have done some research and I believe that I may be a candidate for hip resurfacing. What should be my next step? I am not opposed to traveling to Belgium as I want to have the best of services. What should I expect with regards to cost?

I am approaching my 2 second anniversary on my new hip. My new birthday is February 12 and I just completed running my third half marathon since the surgery.

Before the surgery, I could barely walk. I was eating in a gourmet restaurant in Gent 2 days after my surgery, ran (okay walked) my first 5 km race 5 weeks after the surgery. Now two years later I am still running without pain or discomfort. And during this time, I have played soccer, wrestled, golfed, backpacked, and completed any task I tried without a problem or fear.

I have osteo-arthritis in both hips the left being the worst. Just an enquiry as to the cost and would both be done together, or do you need to wait between operations. I am 36 years old in good health and active.

My orthopedic Surgeon says that I will eventually need a total hip replacement, but that I should wait as long as possible because of the limited life of the replacement. I had a RBHR with Dr. DeSmet on September 17,2003.This day will always stay entrenched in my memory, for it has turned my life around. My hip had deteriorated to the point of my being put on my employers Long Term Disability plan. I was also being pressured to apply for a permanent disability benefits and social security. This would have caused a drastic change in my income and my ability to maintain my current living conditions.

I am happy to report I returned to work on November 3, 2003 on light duty status as a corrections officer. With further conditioning, I am fully expected to return to full duty status.

To some resurface patients out there this may sound like slow progress, But let me point out that I was a borderline case because the head of my femur had worn very badly. In addition, my weight had escalated to well over 400 pounds. I had surgeons advising against resurfacing, but were willing to do a THR while advising me of its possible failure do to my size.

I did a lot of research on my condition before surgery and felt Dr.DeSmet was the one to do my hip. After having Dr.DeSmet perform surgery on me, I am convinced he is the best surgeon in the world. I have my life back. THANK YOU DR.DESMET WITH ALL MY HEART!!!!!

I remember hearing you say something to the effect that your ‘happiest’ patients made YOU feel the most fulfilled. I am not only pain free and happy I can’t even remember what the pain was like anymore; like a bad dream that you helped me wake from. I feel as if you placed me into a time-machine and took me back 4 years ago…BEFORE the very first twinge of Osteoarthritis. I feel like me, like my old self, as if I were 19 years old again.

I want to tell you how appreciative I am for making me so happy! Perhaps you think you restore hips, but that is only a fraction of what you do; YOU RESTORE LIVES!!! I just returned from vacation where I ran and played in the surf, danced the nights away in sexy high-heeled sandals, jogged on the beach, rode bikes, and felt absolutely WONDERFUL the entire time! I am participating in sports and activities I thought I would never be able to do again.

We own a home that has four levels and a dozen steps between each floor; I sprint up and down those steps like a teenager! After suffering with O/A for 9 years, and putting off THR because I was young, I found out about Resurfacing on the net.

From 9 years of walking ´Bone on Bone´ my femoral head and acetabulum were so worn out, that even Mr.McMinn & Mr.Traecy (developers of the BHR) told me that it was unlikely that Resurf surgery would be a success, and that I would probably wake up to a T.H.R.

After spending 9 months researching Resurf surgery, and setting my mind on it, this was devastating news. A Dutch guy called Martin put me in touch with Dr De Smet. (thanks buddy).

De Smet was very confident that he could give me a resurf, so I took a chance on him! And I havn´t looked back since.

I have my life back! I have gone from constant pain... to no pain at all. I play paintball, walk all day, spend all day on my feet, jog from time to time, and I have even Bungee Jumped (A BIG NO! NO!) with no problems at all.

In February of 2000 I was diagnosed with Developmental Hip Dysplasia. I was told that I would require a total hip replacement and that I would have to give up the things that I love most. I am an avid rock climber and cyclist. My US doc accused me of being an "addict to exercise." I cannot describe the devastation I felt. Fortunately I heard about Dr De Smet. He literally gave me my life back. I am 6 months "out" and returning rapidly to my former levels of climbing. I feel that I have been literally pulled from the brink of an abyss. I was diagnosed with Osteoarthritis in the right hip 1n 1997. I was informed by my Orthopedic surgeon that a THR was indicated and never given a choice for treatment.. I am 51 and very active and have been dancing and professionally athletic for 25 years. A frogkick while scuba diving over 25 years ago snapped a tendon in my right hip - I heard something snap; it probably caused a labrum tear. Gradually the cartlidge wore down and I tried everything to keep walking: chiropractic, prolotherapy, acupuncture, Pap-imi, - even psychic healing. Luckily I found hip resurfacing and Dr. DeSmet just in time.

In the meantime my second hip had developed a flexion contracture and had to be resurfaced as well.

Now I´m finally pain free! It´s a bit over a month after my second hip and I´m exercising muscles I haven´t used in years. I feel like I´m wearing a pair of too-tight jeans, but the muscles are loosening up more every day.
